A little oasis of Upper Myanmar, Mount Popa is the home of the country's most powerful Nats (sacred spirits) and is also known as the flower mountain. Mount Popa is the extinct volcano often mistaken for nearby Taung Kalat, the volcanic spire on top of which stands a Buddhist temple and Nat shrine. Taung Kalat is reachable from Bagan by 31 miles of road and 777 steps festooned with Macaques. From the temple there are captivating views back towards the Myingyan Plain and beyond.
